Photographing Nature vs People

One of the difficulties I have faced in photography is switching between taking photos of people and of nature.

If you have a look at the photos uploaded you have probably noticed the lack of images of people, which is because of the particularly selfish reason that I simply prefer to take photographs of nature.

However, as this blog is all about learning I have decided to push myself and try portrait photography.  So where did I turn to… the trusty internet of course! Just as you have.

One main pieces of advice I found was the importance of lighting. “The golden hour” as blogger Sarah Rodriguez-Martinez, call this. This takes place roughly an hour after sunrise, or an hour before sunset. This will make your backgrounds look softer and your objects stand out.

Whilst “the golden hour” is important, it is not always going to be a reality so if the sun is bright try moving your model into the shade or shooting with the light behind them. This is also a great tip for nature photography!

Now this next tip is transferable between both nature and people, and is something I found on Neil van Niekerk’s blog. Try using your flash during the day.

If you are shooting on a bright day your model is bound to end up with shadows across their entire body.  But by using your flash, extra light is added which helps to remove shadows. Who knew!

Now that we have talked about lighting, it is time to discuss backgrounds. Whilst having a full background is perfect for nature photography, when you are photographing people it can make your images appear cluttered.

Photography Pro claims some of the most beautiful portraits come when using bare backgrounds. It draws direct focus to your model and ensures the viewer knows where to look.

One of the main reasons I love nature photography is that I can take as many photos I like without the focus becoming uncomfortable or restless.

Having an awkward or impatient model can ruin your entire shoot so really put an effort into making them feel comfortable. Talk to them and make them laugh. This will help to make your photos look natural and effortless.

Whilst I am sure there are many other tips those are some I found most interesting and helpful. So, make sure to tag me in your photos so I can see your progress!
